Niles Avenue Sewer Improvements – C-1190023
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The purpose of this project is to eliminate the occurrence of repeat sewer overflows due to severe concrete and debris blockage from an active recycled concrete facility located northwest of Marietta Boulevard NW and Niles Avenue NW. The pipeline will redirect the current extraneous flows from the existing 12 inch and 15 inch sanitary sewer trunk lines. The existing 15 inch sewer line will be realigned and roughly 2,100 linear feet of 18 inch ductile iron pipe encased in a 36 inch steel sleeve will be installed. Approximately 8 new manholes will be installed along the sewer realignment.
WHAT KIND OF WORK WILL BE PERFORMED?
The City uses various techniques to repair, replace and realign aging sewer lines. The scope of this project and method of construction will consist of micro tunneling to carry wastewater flows from the existing sewer line to a new sewer line which will connect to new manholes. The process is cost effective, protects the environment, and allows deep installation of pipe under existing utilities.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Residents and businesses within the project area may experience a disruption of service with lane and road closures, detours, work on private property and noise during construction. However, we will notify impacted residents and businesses through letters, door hangers or face-to-face prior to work starting in the area. City representatives will also attend NPU meetings to discuss planned work and provide periodic updates.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT?
The improvements will extend the life of the sewer 50+ years while meeting the requirements of the First Amended Consent Decree (FACD). Structural upgrades to the system are necessary to replace aging and deteriorated sewers to maintain the reliability of the sewers. Rehabilitation of the sanitary sewers reduces the amount of extraneous flows and,
• Reduces sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) events due to structural defects
• Ensures adequate capacity to accommodate future economic growth
and development
• Provides sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) Control projects with life-cycle cost savings
• Minimizes environmental objections
WHO WILL BE IMPACTED?
The City will be working in sewershed PRC05, situated within the Proctor Creek Basin. The work affects Council District 3 and NPU K. The sewer line is located in the area between 1277 Niles Avenue and 1530 Marietta Boulevard.
