The City of Atlanta is committed to providing excellent customer service while maintaining and enhancing the region’s water sources. This program utilizes grassroots efforts as well as traditional public relations tactics in notifying the public of our upcoming work. These methods include door-to-door contact, written notifications, phone calls and meeting attendance.
The City of Atlanta has partnered with the social navigation app, Waze to further assist with the reduction of traffic congestion. Waze provides users with real-time construction, crash and road closure data. By partnering with Waze the City can better help residents respond to the constantly changing environment of city streets and shorten their commutes. The Department of Watershed Management has joined the private social network for neighborhoods, Nextdoor to share relevant project updates. With infrastructure projects happening across the City, Nextdoor is a great tool to keep you up-to-date on where we’re working and what we are doing. Although DWM will not be able to see the content on your neighborhood website, you have the ability to reply to our messages or send a private message. Get alerted about emergencies and other important community news by signing up for our Emergency Alert Program, NotifyATL. This system enables us to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods as well as community events and crime alerts.
In July of 1998, to settle a lawsuit brought against the City by the United States Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA), the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper and a citizen downstream, Mayor Bill Campbell signed a Federal Consent Decree committing the City of Atlanta to an accelerated program of activities designed to further improve water quality in metro Atlanta streams and the Chattahoochee and South Rivers.The Consent Decree specifically directed the City of Atlanta to develop and implement a solution that would end water quality violations resulting from combined sewer overflows (CSOs).
